20 Colleges Not Worth Their Tuition In 2012

As the class of 2012 prepares to graduate, another group of bright-eyed youths are anticipating beginning college life this fall. But many face the daunting challenge of affording it.
With the cost of a four-year degree escalating, many parents (and students) want to know they're getting good value for their education dollars.

The calculations are based on the average amount that alumni of their respective colleges earned working -- minus the total cost of college -- and the amount they would have earned as a high school graduate. So how do you know if you're getting a good return on your investment, or ROI? PayScale recently crunched the data of more than 850 colleges in the U.S., examining both in- and out-of-state tuition, when applicable, and what grads typically get back in lifetime earnings.
The result is a list of winners and losers -- and as you can see below, some of the 20 colleges with the lowest ROI have recognizable names. But with any list of winners and losers, those institutions that ranked at the bottom have their defenders, as comment posted on PayScale's site show.
One graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, which finished dead last in PayScale's rankings with an ROI of -$189,000, said that he "wouldn't change a thing" about his educational experience.
"The skills that I learned through my degree program are incredibly valuable," said the student, who identified himself as Chris Brinlee Jr.
Others chimed in, arguing that PayScale's methodology is flawed. Noting that the survey multiplied ROI by the school's retention rate, "h.spaeth" argued that "It comes as no surprise then that all of the top schools for 'ROI' are private schools with high retention rates."

Lured by cheaper cost, many Indians opt for Chinese medical colleges

MUMBAI: From swanky cellphones to sleek Android tablets, China makes everything affordable. And now, even Indian doctors are 'Made in China', and that too for only 25-50% of the cost here.

For 20-year-old Anusree Ravi from Kerala, the dream of becoming a doctor was nearly dashed when she failed to qualify in entrance examinations for government medical colleges in India and the course fees for private colleges turned out to be beyond her parents' means.

However, unwilling to give up hope, Anusree decided to apply to universities in China, which she had heard were a cheaper option.

For U.S. College Applicants, Extra Activities Are Encouraged

Students interested in attending an American university should know that admissions officers will base their decisions on more than just good grades and high test scores. They want to know how a student might enhance the university just by being there. A good indicator is an examination of personal interests, often illustrated by extracurricular activities.
That phrase — extracurricular activities — may seem unfamiliar to Indian students. Generally, it applies to things that students participate in outside of school that show interests, hobbies and future career plans. They should be proactive. (Going to the movies doesn’t count, but making a documentary about a relevant issue does.)
This week on The Choice on India Ink, we talked to Micah Sieber, an admissions officer at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., about the types of extracurricular activities that American students often include on their college applications.

Web glitch hits Jesus and Mary College admission

Aspirants trying to apply to Jesus and Mary College were in for a tough time over the weekend. The college introduced an online application process this year but its website developed an error on Saturday evening following which students could not access the form. The website was repaired by Sunday evening.
"The problem was not with the online application process but with the bandwidth of the college website. It has been taken care of," said principal, Sister Marina John.

Indian students eye Ivy League universities like Cambridge, Harvard and Oxford despite rupee depreciation

The depreciation of rupee is unlikely to lead to a drop in the number of Indian students seeking admissions to the most coveted global colleges abroad. The best schools are betting that an increase in financial aid for foreign students will propel the number of applications, including from India, this year. Stiff competition during admission to Indian universities is expected to further boost the number of students opting to study abroad rather than battle it out at the home turf.

Mumbai: First merit list for online junior college admissions today

MUMBAI: With the first general merit list for online junior college admissions to be announced today, anxiety levels of students are reaching new heights. Just as students are clueless about what to expect from the list, college heads are confused. However, they all agreed that cut-offs may not be higher than last year.
"Cut-offs will change from college to college, depending on choices made by students. There may be a slight drop or no difference in cut-offs, but definitely cut-offs will not be higher than last year," said Vijay Joshi, principal, K J Somaiya College, Vidyavihar.

Haldia medical college gets court breather

KOLKATA: The Calcutta high court on Wednesday annulled a decision by Medical Council of India and West Bengal University of Health Sciences, the affiliating body of private medical colleges in the state, refusing to grant affiliation to the Haldia-based ICARE Institute of Medical Science and Research, headed by former CPM MP Lakshman Seth. Justice Girish Gupta revoked the order terming it "illogical" and directed the college to apply for the MCI affiliation afresh.
In a jolt to both the state university and MCI, the court observed that there is no embargo, in the present statutes, that a dental and a medical college can't be run on the same premises. This - among others - formed the core reason why the affiliation was cancelled. The twin orders cancelling affiliation by MCI and the state university in November, last year, had prompted been meshed in legal dispute after the college authorities and the first year MBBS students to appeal against it at the high court and Supreme Court.

Fee row: Engineering colleges moot loan scheme

HYDERABAD: A fresh proposal, which puts the onus of paying fees on students from weaker sections, was on Sunday put in front of the experts' committee set up for examining the fee structure in professional colleges in the state. As per the new blueprint, which was drawn up by the managements of state engineering colleges, the government should provide educational loans to students in collaboration with Indian Banks' Association. Students will have to start repaying the loan six years after joining the course, that is, two years after its completion. The student would, however, need to repay the loan with interest.
